After four seasons at the helm, Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton really came into her own with the label’s fall 2012 preview. Voluminous mushroom - like shapes dominated the catwalk complete with ruffled capes, fur-adorned sleeves and organza covered gowns. A color palette of inky black, scarlet red, powder pink and ivory set the stage for the dramatic silhouettes that were more evening wear fantasy than ready-to-wear. Sleek visors and barbell shaped belts in techno silver brought a futuristic vibe to the shaggy designs. Burton also injected some romanticism into the stunning display with feminine silhouettes and mid-drift baring tops.

It appears the Valentino woman’s romantic gowns are getting a strict makeover for the upcoming fall. With fall 2012, Valentino designers Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri brought an edgy twist to their demure romanticism with an opening section of leather capes and skirts. Structured silhouettes transformed into floor-length gowns in a fall palette of black, nude, scarlet and ivory. Tailored pants and refined blouses dominated the presentation as did decorative patterns ranging from flowers to the more abstract. The duo’s lacework also made an appearance in the showing paired with sheer long sleeves and ruffled skirts. A juxtaposition of strict elegance and feminine frills win another hit for Piccioli and Chiuri.

Marking their second season as creative directors at Kenzo, designers Humberto Leon and Carol Lim offered up their refined take of urban street style for the label’s fall 2012 showing. The collection offered a fun look at modern staples with zig-zag patterns in fall hues of army green, burgundy, sapphire, black and white. Knitted tops paired with billowing pants or short skirts appeared on the runway alongside animal prints and bold, graphic patterns. Outerwear was bulky, featuring sculpted shoulders and arms. The departure from the label’s romantic prints and silhouettes certainly shows with Leon and Lim’s new vision of youthful nonchalance.

For fall 2012, Mugler creative director Nicola Formichetti looked towards the archives for inspiration with Thierry Mugler’s 1997 “Insect” collection. The new season plays with arthropod shapes, featuring winged shoulders, furry sleeves, high slits and insect - like cut outs. A color palette of mostly black and white lets the shapes of autumn stand out. For the final section of the show, Formichetti sent out a parade of all black with lightweight hoods and sheer sleeves.

Designers Stefano Citron and Federico Piaggi presented their second collection for Gianfranco Ferré with the label’s fall 2012 showing presented on the final day of Milan Fashion Week. The two embraced an androgynous aesthetic and used a color palette of inky black, silvery grey, navy and off white. Forgoing patterns or jewelry, the new season was all about shape with streamlined silhouettes that were modern if not futuristic. Ferré’s androgynous heroine also got a touch of glam with the use of lush fur and metallic fabrics for the upcoming fall.

For fall 2012, Bottega Veneta creative director Tomas Maier presented a collection of dark elegance. Opening with an army of somber black ensembles, the Bottega woman looks towards minimal yet form-fitting silhouettes for the new season. As the show continued, however, Maier introduced some color in the form of soft lavender, dark plum and abstract prints in shades of citrus orange. Many looks were matched with black gloves that ran far past the elbow.

For fall 2012, Blumarine showcased a collection of over the top glamour with colorful fur coats, wild animal prints and techno silver fabrics. Opening the show with sexy ski bunny coats, designer Anna Molinari made sure the fall season was a playful one by featuring oversize bags that looked like poms poms more than actual accessories. As the show progressed, some sparkle was added in the form of sequin embellished tops, pants and chunky jewelry. Always unapologetic with the amount of excess and glamour, Blumarine brought a sense of carefree style to the upcoming season.
